Back to daily quickies.

This is such a beautiful color. I know it’s strange to blog about it, since this color is unexpectedly appealing to me, but I just want to remember it.
I just wanted to share with you this beautiful painting that a friend of mine, Dara Alter, did. :) It is my favorite among her “Greater Toronto” series that she currently has on her website. Her other series, “City of Gold” is extremely thought provoking also, part of which was exhibited at the Alfa Art Gallery.

Today’s painting day with Christine. But Will Tan is missing! Success? Maybe for Christine…
I tried to work on the 6-panel painting (parts of which you’ll see on the floor) but we’re not in sync, it and I. So I am distracting myself with a new painting for the time being. Cowardice? Maybe.
So, for the first time in awhile, I tried to work on a painting that I started a few weeks ago. The painting was initially created in gouche, which is a medium I’m not very accustomed to. Things were going fairly well, though. Then, I attempted to use acrylics because I can’t paint in oils in this space. It went wrong. I’m guessing it’s because acrylics tend to make me less optimistic with its fast-drying qualities (note: have not worked in acrylics in more than year) and its the color of the paint that come in the tubes. More flat, less deep than oils.
Anyway, dont want to make too many excuses. I’ll try again tomorrow and, if the painting goes right, I will certainly post a picture up. I’m hoping also to give myself a small digital project now that I’ve gotten myself a sweet Wacom Intuos4 tablet. So many possibilities! But only if I get into a work groove.
Nuit Étoilée Sur Le Rhône - Vincent Van Gogh (1888)
I saw this at the MoMA about two years ago. I really loved it. I think it’s one of Van Gogh’s most beautiful pieces. It always come to mind when I’m walking by a river or lake, lightened by the city’s buildings, as depicted in this work. For me, it reminds me of those moments when I question when art mimics life, followed by the wonderful realization of what life cannot mimic from art. Additionally, the texture of this painting is phenomenal. Really wonderful.

About the Artist
Dara Alter obtained her degree in Studio Art from the University of Guelph. Heavily influenced by her cultural ties, she paints her memories of Israel in order to examine the North American Jewish nostalgia for an idealized nation. In the last five years, she travelled to South America, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, which additionally influenced her works. Alter is most interested exploring location and place as it relates to her personal experiences and uses a specific palette that corresponds to the scenery in a particular region. She has exhibited in Minnesota, New York and New Jersey in the United States as well as in Toronto, Ontario in Canada.
